CARSTAIRS-CREMONA-DIDSBURY - A group of bikers from the Calgary chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse went through several local communities as part of their 100 Mile Run to raise awareness for their cause.
On May 20 about 70 bikes rolled through the towns of Cremona, Carstairs, Didsbury, Sundre, Bowden and Olds stopping at each one to meet people and spread their message.
Scott, whose road name is Got-That, told the Gazette the ride was excellent. (Please note that members of the group keep their identities hidden for protection).
"It was a huge success," said Scott. "We found that every town we went through was very busy. The 100 Mile Ride is more about building awareness than raising money. So in that regard it was a massive, massive success.
"We were surprised that we had some people along the way raising money for us. Being a non-profit is always nice even though that wasn't what the weekend was about."
Scott said the group raised over $3,000 on their trip.
"We were very excited about that," he said. "Sundre was very, very busy for us. We could have spent a lot more time there. We'll be back to Sundre for sure. Didsbury and Carstairs, we've done some there already and some of the people there knew who we were already. We were very well received. For what we set out to do - maybe reach one more child - it was a huge success."
Bikers Against Child Abuse is an organization that helps provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically or emotionally abused.
"We will be there every step of the process that the child needs us for, to get through court, facing abusers, or just to feel loved and comforted again," said Sully, Calgary chapter president. "Our goal is only intended to empower those children that just need to be children again."
