Bridge fire could be Crime Stoppers feature

The Didsbury RCMP officer investigating the October 2009 arson fire that destroyed the original Big Prairie Bridge northwest of Cremona has requested that Crime Stoppers consider featuring the case in a re-enactment video.

Const. Derek Lascelles says the detachment should know as early as this week whether the case will be covered.

“I am just waiting to hear back from Crime Stoppers,” Lascelles said Thursday. “They are not able to do re-enactments for absolutely everything that comes their way, so I am waiting to hear back from them to see if this file will be accepted for re-enactment.

“The purpose of a Crime Stoppers' re-enactment is that maybe we can jog some memories and get some people thinking about the events of that day. Maybe somebody has information that we haven't heard yet.”

The bridge was destroyed in an early-morning fire on Oct. 22, 2009. The call to 911 came in at about 5 a.m.

“All the evidence that was collected at the time lead us to believe it was intentionally set,” he said. “We've deemed it to be an arson and that's why it is still an open file.”

There were no reported injuries in the fire.

Since opening the investigation into the arson fire, RCMP officers have interviewed many area residents and others.

“A large number of interviews have been conducted,” he said.

The new $2.8-million bridge was opened to traffic earlier this month following almost three years of traffic detours.

Anyone with information about the arson fire is being asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or Didsbury RCMP at 403-335-3382.
