Mountain View County councillors have OK'd financing for the repair of a cattle bridge in the county's Division 2.
Located in the Dogpound area between range roads 34 and 35, the bridge was built more than 100 years ago.
“According to Alberta transportation bridge records, this crossing was installed in 1910 and is made of creosote lumber,” acting CAO John Rusling said in a note to council. “The crossing was cored (examined) recently by our consultant and is still structurally in good shape.
“The landowner that this cattle crossing serves requested that the county come and repair the crossing. The crossing has not been draining properly and has become quite wet, impeding cattle from using the crossing easily.”
The county has considered three options to repair the bridge: installing a gravel floor, installing a concrete floor or installing a wood floor.
“After reviewing the options with the landowner, the contractor and our bridge consultant, it was felt that the wood floor was the best option for cost and for the ability of both the county and farmer to repair and maintain,” he said.
Councillors approved $25,000 for the repair project.
