Mountain View County council has decided to replace two bridges instead of repairing them.

Mountain View County council has approved funding for construction of a replacement culvert bridge south of Highway 582 on Rge. Rd. 271.

The move came by way of motion at the July 12 council meeting, with the funds being allocated from the bridge reserve account.

“During the spring melt in 2018, BF 9284 (the current bridge at the location) and another bridge (BF 1179, located south of 9284) sustained heavy damage,” administration said in a briefing note to council. “Due to the nature of the damage a substantial amount of work and capital investment will be required to repair these locations.

“It is felt since these bridges are scheduled for replacement in the next seven years, that they should be replaced instead of repaired.”

On May 9, council instructed administration to delay replacement of two other bridges until next year, and instead focus on replacement of 1179 and 9284.

“Stantec was hired due to the urgent nature of this request and their familiarity working with the county crews to complete the preliminary engineering reports on the replacement structures. The goal is to replace (the current bridge) with our own forces in 2018.”

The new BF 9284 structure will be a nine-foot corrugated steel pipe bridge. The total cost is estimated to be $383,000.

Council deferred discussion on the other bridge until the August council meeting.
