A 55-year-old Kamloops, B.C., man was issued a careless driving ticket after he allegedly caused a four-vehicle crash on Highway 2 south of Bowden on June 30.

Police said the man was driving a semi truck that was pulling two empty flat deck trailers and failed to recognize that traffic in the highway's northbound lanes had slowed near an area where Alberta Transportation crews were conducting crack sealing maintenance near the border of Mountain View and Red Deer counties.

Crews had set up signs indicating the work was taking place as well as signs indicating a reduced speed limit of 80 kilometres an hour.

When the driver came upon the slowed traffic at about 11:30 a.m., he attempted an evasive manoeuvre but still ended up colliding with a Dodge Caravan minivan, a Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV and a car, police said.

No one was injured but the truck ended up jackknifed across both of the highway's northbound lanes and it and the three other vehicles were not operational following the crash.

The crash forced the diversion of northbound traffic onto a gravel service road east of the highway for nearly two hours while police investigated the incident and the vehicles were removed.

The Innisfail Integrated Traffic Services the Bowden Fire Department and emergency medical services all attended the crash.
