Carstairs history book may be cancelled

CARSTAIRS - A project to bring the history of Carstairs and the area to print for Canada's 150th is in danger of being cancelled due to a lack of submissions.

Brian Longeway, director for the Carstairs history book committee, said they are hoping to get an influx of submissions so they can get the book done.

"We did the book in 1995 for Carstairs," said Longeway. "We're trying to do another one. We are trying to collect information for Beyond Our Prairie Trails volume 3 as an unofficial Canada 150 project, but we've had a huge shortage of family and community stories."

Longeway said they expected to receive many updates from the first two volumes as well as several more entries from newer families to the area.

"It is my belief that this will be the last recorded complete history for Carstairs and area," he said. "After a community gets more population it is very hard to organize a general history of a community. Olds and Didsbury only have one community history book each as they grew faster than Carstairs."

Longeway said the committee will wait until September before re-evaluating whether to proceed or not.

Anyone interested in helping out can contact Longeway at 403-337-2395 or check out their Facebook page for ideas.

The first Carstairs history book, Prairie Trails, was written by the Carstairs Centennial History Committee and released in 1967. The second history book, Beyond our Prairie Trails, was released in July 1995.
