A 47-year-old Carstairs man has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting that he shot and killed an ex-girlfriend at her request in Calgary in 2016.

Joseph D’Arcy Schluter entered the plea in Court of Queen’s Bench on June 15.

Schluter admitted that he killed Cindy Enger, 51, in her Cranston home on Jan. 22, 2016.

Schluter and Enger had made a pact for him to kill her because she was suffering chronic pain, according to an agreed statement of facts accepted by the court.

Enger and Schluter had previously made a video outlining their plans.

Schluter was originally charged with first-degree murder.

The defence and Crown made a joint submission for a life sentence with no eligibility for parole until 2028.
