The new chairman of the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools board says he plans to continue building on “the great success that the division has experienced” in recent years.

Guy Pelletier was appointed as chairman following the October school board election. He replaces former chairperson Adriana LaGrange, who is now vice-chairperson.

Pelletier, a second term trustee, served as vice-chairman during the last school term.

“We have a great board, a solid cohesive board, so it's not like I need to take it in any different direction,” said Pelletier. “We have a great administration and great staff, so it's really just a question of moving things forward and making sure we keep education at the top of the agenda, and keep our parents engaged and encourage them to communicate with us.”

Asked if there are particular issues facing the division over the next four years, Pelletier said, “One of the key ones is infrastructure. We've got a division that is really growing, so finding room for the students to continue to learn effectively is a challenge. We've got a need for a new high school in Red Deer.

“Infrastructure is always a challenge. I think we've done a really good job maintaining what we've got, but now we've got to find room to accommodate the growth.”

The Red Deer Catholic school division includes St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School in Innisfail and Holy Trinity Catholic School in Olds.
