Committee promotes 'sense of ownership'

MVC councillors have been given an update on the activities of the municipality's multi-stakeholder corporate change committee.

MVC councillors have been given an update on the activities of the municipality's multi-stakeholder corporate change committee.

Members Ryan Morrison, Rachel Brown and Jane Fulton appeared as a delegation before councillors during a recent policies and priorities committee meeting.

The committee was formed under the direction of CAO Tony Martens to “identify, discuss and develop recommendations to enhance the working culture of Mountain View County employees.”

The goal of the committee is to “encourage and foster a strong sense of ‘ownership' among county employees and assist in building increased productivity and service delivery to county ratepayers.”

Councillors heard that the committee has recently adopted the following values statement: “Mountain View County will work in an environment of mutual respect between all sectors, including field staff, office staff, supervisors, administration, and the public. Respect will include but not be limited to equality, honesty and fairness.”

The committee also recently completed a survey of all 82 full-time MVC staff. It found that employees' workplace values include respect, equality, honesty, fairness, and staff-council-manager interaction.

Committee chairman Morrison said the committee is doing well in “assisting managers to understand what employees really think, rather than what the managers think employees think.”

The committee's mandate does not include addressing wages and salaries, personnel matters, discipline or grievances.
