CARSTAIRS - At the recent regular council meeting, councillors accepted for information a resolution from the Town of Sundre requesting support for fair taxation of cannabis operations.

"Because cannabis is considered agricultural, it's taxed at a lower rate than a commercial business would be," said Carstairs CAO Carl McDonnell. "That's what Sundre is looking for, should we be able to tax someone's business as opposed to agricultural.

"Council has requested more information. We haven't had any applications for facilities here so we haven't had to look at it up close."

Mayor Lance Colby said that council was looking for more information on cannabis legislation.

"We're waiting to learn more about what's going on with that legislation and how it's going to work," he said. "So far we really don't have anything coming here. We just have our bylaw in place governing vaping and smoking and smoke-related items in our parks where children are."
