Council given grant update

Mountain View County council has received an update on the 2018 rural community grant program. The review came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting. In all, $33,405 was approved for 2018.

The review came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting. In all, $33,405 was approved for 2018.

Allocation requests were approved earlier by the multi-stakeholder community services grant review committee.

Rural community grants are provided to communities and organizations operating recreation and culture programs in the county.

“This grant may be used towards operating or facility upgrade costs and expenditures required for recreation and cultural programs and facilities, but not including community hall facilities,” administration said in a briefing note.

  • The Bergen News received $1,750 for publication operating costs.
  • The Carstairs & District History Book Society received $2,355 for printing of Beyond Our Prairie Trails III book.
  • The Carstairs High School Rodeo Club received $2,000 for the annual high school rodeo.
  • Cremona FCSS received $800 for Red Cross First Aid course.
  • Didsbury & District Historical Society received $5,000 for history book publication.
  • The Elkridge Archery Club received $2,500 for the 3D national indoor archery championships.
  • The Mount View Special Riding Association received $2,000 for therapeutic riding program expenses.
  • The Mountain View Arts Society received $5,000 for art show/festival, Global Drums.
  • Mountain View Cowpoke Jr. Rodeo received $5,000 for junior winter rodeo series operating costs.
  • Olds Community Chorus received $5,000 for accompanist and conductor.
  • The Eagle Valley Community Centre’s request for $3,500 for the Eagle Valley – Our Legacy document was denied.

Grants of $2,000 or less receive 100 per cent of the funds upon approval; with grants greater than $2,000, the organization receives 75 per cent when the grant is approved and the remainder when the project is completed.

Councillors were also given an update on community hall grant approvals, which totalled $58,925 in 2018.

  • Bearberry Wapitana Society received $4,000 for cooler and stove replacement, fire extinguishers and operating costs.
  • Coburn Community Club received $975 for dust suppression.
  • Dogpound Hall received $2,000 for general maintenance and upkeep, and new commercial door.
  • Harmattan Community Centre received $7,500 for new well, windows, toilet, lighting and yard maintenance.
  • Innis Lake Community hall received $2,000 for operating expenses.
  • James River Community Hall received $9,500 for kitchen upgrades, bathroom air dryers, and chair replacement.
  • Lone Pine Hall/Ag Society received $7,500 for boiler replacement, storage shelves.
  • Melvin Hall Society received $2,000 for tables and signage.
  • Midway Hall received $500 for roof repair.
  • Rosebud Community Hall received $1,500 for operating expenses.
  • Water Valley Community Hall received $7,500 for parking lot gravel, tables and chairs, and range.
  • Westerdale Community Association received $5,150 for dust suppression and concrete pad.
  • Westward Ho Hall received $3,800 for wheelchair ramp renovations, operating expenses.
  • Zella Community Association received $5,000 for insulation upgrade, storage shed, floor refinishing, and ceiling works.

Councillors were also given an update on the public transportation grant program, which saw total approvals of $45,000 in 2018.

Groups receiving funding included Aspen Ridge ($4,500), Sundre Supportive Living Facility ($4,500), Chinook Winds Lodge ($4,500), Mount View Lodge ($4,500), Olds & District Evergreen Club ($2,500), Town of Didsbury seniors supports ($2,500), Sundre West Country Centre ($2,500), Accredited Supports to the Community ($8,900), Village of Cremona ($2,500), Cremona School Enhancement Society ($2,800), and Special Olympics Olds & District ($5,300).
