Mountain View County chief administrative officer (CAO) Tony Martens has announced his retirement effective Dec. 31, 2017.

Reeve Bruce Beattie made the official announcement during the April 12 regularly scheduled council meeting.

Martens has been with the county for more than 30 years, including the past six as CAO.

Reeve Bruce Beattie commended Martens for his longtime service to the municipality.

"It is very clear and we understand the role he played in getting our council on the right track and keeping the county moving in the right direction," said Beattie.

"Our sincere thanks for the work you've done for the county and will continue to do for the next seven months."

The county will be starting the process to find a new CAO right way, he said.

"Our intention is to have a new CAO in place prior to Tony's departure so we will have a smooth transition," he said.

For his part, Martens said, "For me it has been an honour and a pleasure to serve the councils and the staff and the ratepayers of Mountain View County. I don't think there is a better place in Alberta."

In an interview, Martens said, "It's been an awesome experience (working for the county) and for my family as well. I've really come to enjoy the area. I've had great councils and staff to work with. If I had to do it all over again I certainly would."
