Fundraising towards the construction of a skatepark in Cremona is going well, with the recent 2nd annual skate-a-thon bringing in $6,957, for a total to date of $30,000 raised, said co-organizer Ashley Newsome.

The Cremona Skate Park Association, formed in 2016 as a non-profit society, has been spearheading the project.

The Village of Cremona has committed the land for the future skatepark in front of the village office and right beside the school and newly renovated public library, she said.

“We just hosted our 2nd annual skate-a-thon at the Cremona school,” said Newsome. “The kids collect pledges for how long they can skate; the more money they raise the better the prizes they can be entered for.

“Our prizes ranged from scooters, to flying squirrel passes, movie tickets and almost every child left with a prize. These outstanding children have raised over $14,000. And together with our fundraising efforts we have raised $30,000.”

Numerous local groups and organizations have provided support to date, including the Cremona Lions Club, Country Fellowship Church, ATB Carstairs, the Congregational Church, Water Valley-Cremona Chamber of Commerce, Parkhill Women’s Guild, and Dawn Lashmar Remax Reality.

Groundbreaking on the skatepark is expected in the fall, she said.

“In the meantime we continue to apply for grants and any fundraising opportunity we can find,” she said.
