CARSTAIRS - Development growth in the town is picking up according to the number of building permits issued during the first half of 2017.

According to the latest tally, Carstairs continues to see significant growth with a number of new housing starts as well as new development such as decks and basements.

"We had 67 building permits out and 22 of them are new homes," said CAO Carl McDonnell. "So the balance of them would be renovations or decks."

McDonnell said most of the new homes are single family dwellings with some duplexes, which are still considered single family.

McDonnell said the statistics show that there is still good interest in Carstairs among developers.

"The developers are telling us that the next three months will be busy as well," he said. "We're anticipating around 45-50 new home starts this year."

McDonnell said the number of permits is on par with last year.

"The last month has picked up," he said. "The first quarter of this year was definitely slow."
