Dorien Llewellyn wins Pan Am gold medal

Dorien Llewellyn won a gold medal in overall water skiing competion for Canada at the XVIII Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru.

Dorien Llewellyn, son of Innisfail's nine-time world waterskiing champion Jaret Llewellyn, is a golden boy at the current Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru.

The 23-year-old native of Florida, who skis for Canada, earned his gold medal this week in the overall waterskiing competition. Both his father Jaret and uncle Kreg Llewellyn are past Pan American waterskiing champions

The overall title is considered waterskiing's most difficult category, the decathlon of the sport, as it is won from a combination of each skiers top scores from three events - slalom, trick and jump.

The younger Llewellyn, who is the grandson of Innisfailian Chris Llewellyn, had an overall score of 2885.50, more than 260 points ahead of second place finisher Rodrigo Miranda of Chile.

In the individual events Dorien also won silver in the Tricks competition, bronze in the Jump and placed fifth in Slalom. Canadian teammate Stephen Neveu of Calgary won the silver in slalom. The four-member waterski team brought home a total of 10 individual medals.
