Mountain View County council has given approval to a development permit application for a new event facility in the Dogpound neighbourhood outside Cremona.

The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

Since the facility is in a direct control district, council is the approving authority for the development permit application.

The proposed $1.1-million facility is located approximately one kilometre east of the Village of Cremona (at SW 2-30-4-5) adjacent to Highway 580 on the north side.

The development would include the main event facility, an accessory building (horse shelter), an eating establishment, an indoor dwelling, and a security suite.

"The applicant is requesting consideration for an event facility in a 8,930 square foot building," administration said in a briefing note to council,

"This event center would be located within a historic homestead area consisting of 5.94 acres and a 4.05 acre area from the reminder of the quarter section. The proposed event facility will be incorporated into the existing barn that is currently being restored.

"The applicant has stated the event facility will provide a unique wedding or event experience. By combining a historic farm site, a rustic traditional barn setting with spectacular valley views, with old fashioned values, going the extra mile, the traditional ëfarm work ethic' and country hospitality, (the facility) will deliver quality results and a memorable experience every time."

Events proposed for the facility include weddings, reunions and holiday celebrations, council heard.

"It's great to see this project going forward. It's great to have this development going forward," said Reeve Bruce Beattie.

Coun. Greg Harris added that he has spoken to people in the area and the project is "generally well supported."

Coun. Al Kemmere did not attend the Nov. 22 council meeting.
