OLDS - An extreme cold warning for many central Alberta locales continues Monday with early morning and overnight wind chills near - 40 Celsius (C) likely.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issues extreme cold warnings when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
An extreme cold warning was issued Sunday afternoon for some central Alberta locales including Red Deer County and urban centres near it.
The warning was extended that evening to include Mountain View County and the urban centres near it.
The warning for both areas continued into Feb. 3.
“While temperatures will moderate somewhat during the daytime hours, nighttime and early morning wind chills near minus 40 will likely continue for parts of Alberta until the middle of the week,” the 10:45 p.m. Feb. 2 weather alert update for the Mountain View County area said.
The warning included the following locations:
• Mountain View County near Carstairs, Cremona, Water Valley, Olds, Didsbury and Sundre
• Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.
Environment and Climate Change Canada advises to watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
"Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside," the warning states.
