Extreme cold warning issued Saturday for parts of Red Deer County

Temperatures are expected to moderate Monday afternoon ending the period of -40 C or colder through the weekend

RED DEER COUNTY – Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an extreme cold warning Saturday for parts of Red Deer County and other locations in Alberta Saturday.

The Jan. 18 warning area included Red Deer County near Elnora, Lousana, Delburne and Pike Lake.

In it’s 4:12 p.m. Jan. 18 alert update, the federal agency said overnight and early morning wind chill values of – 40 Celcius (C)  to - 45 C would continue through the weekend.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” the warning said.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.

“Cover up,” the federal agency advised. “Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

Temperatures are expected to moderate Monday afternoon ending the period of extreme cold.
