RED DEER COUNTY – Parts of Red Deer County remained under an extreme cold warning Sunday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Jan. 19 morning alert update said wind chill values of - 40 Celsius (C) to - 45 C are expected to return Sunday night.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

The Jan. 19 warning area included Red Deer County near Elnora, Lousana, Delburne and Pike Lake. A warning was in place for the same area on Saturday as well.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, the federal agency said.

“Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” the alert said, adding “If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

While Mountain View County and nearby locations are not included in the warning, parts of Kneehill County are including Torrington.

Wind chills are expected to moderate Monday afternoon ending the period of extreme cold.
