Farm safety centre seeks support

CREMONA – The Village of Cremona council has agreed to have the municipality provide support for the Farm Safety Centre. The move came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

The centre provides safety tips and lessons for rural schoolchildren at the elementary level.

“The children’s thirst for learning makes face-to-face interaction with them both rewarding and a bit of an adventure,” executive director Laura Nelson said in a letter to council.

“The recent program evaluation indicated that more than 85 per cent of the rural children we reach are remembering farm safety messages year to year. The evaluation also found that review materials sent home with these rural children are an important bridge to their parents.”

Council OK'd a $150 donation to the centre. The group had asked for $300.

Meanwhile, council accepted update reports from various community groups and boards. The reviews also came during council’s recent regularly scheduled meeting.

Reports were received from the Cremona/Water Valley and District Chamber of Commerce, the Village of Cremona Municipal Library Board, Family and Community Support Service (FCSS), and the CCES Advisory Council.

The chamber of commerce report covered three recent meetings, in September, October and November.

According to the update of the Show and Shine event, income was $11,829 (plus $1,400 outstanding from Mountain View County grant), expenses were $9,529, and net profit was $2,299.75.

The library report included a building update.

“A bigger sink has been suggested for cleaning purposes and wheelchair accessibility may be an issue. The current sink will remain until after the inspection. Volunteer firefighters came in to remove all of the remaining items in the upstairs storage area. History books are in good shape and can be sold. Manager has ordered new chairs, all solid wood, as per new code not allowing cloth.”

The FCSS report stated, in part, that, “our signs are in for the Snow Angels program and we are ready to go. The helping hands program has lots of volunteers and it is just waiting for someone that needs them.

“The idea of a group fundraiser and volunteer recognition night has been bought forward. The idea is that instead of all our little groups doing individual fundraising we could all join forces and have one huge night.

“This would also reduce requests for prizes/silent auction items from local businesses. We will work on putting a meeting together with area groups and see how they feel.”

In the CCES report, Michael Kerfoot said, in part, that, “The sewing class has been very popular. We have had to hold a second time to accommodate everyone.

“The playschool will provide entertainment for the seniors' luncheon in December. Christmas pajama movie night will happen in December. The Aging Well in Community grant has been sent. I will be working on the FCSS grant next.”
