It was a relatively quiet long weekend for police, but there were still a large number of fines and tickets handed out between May 16 and 19, say area RCMP detachments.

Cpl. Clint Gulash of the Didsbury RCMP Detachment, said despite his officers' large coverage area, they dealt with fewer incidents than in recent Victoria Day weekends.

Although the number of campers was the lowest it has been in years – likely due to the weather – police still turned up a few things, he said.

They didn't have many problems with campers, but arrested a 24-year-old Calgary man for possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

That man was caught with 15 one-gram bags of cocaine and a total of 164 grams of marijuana, after a search and seizure following a traffic stop, he said.

Another vehicle, with a 24-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, was pulled over and police found them to be in possession of 220 grams of marijuana.

“About 173 vehicles were checked and we had three motor vehicle collisions reported. One 24-hour suspension was issued, two vehicles were towed, and we had 22 violation tickets and/or warnings issued,” said Gulash.

Const. Mike Martin of the Sundre RCMP Detachment said, “We had to make sure everyone stayed in line and to enforce provincial criminal legislation.”

His officers handed out 36 Traffic Safety Act charges, including speeding, distracted driving and charges for lacking the proper documents.

There were also 17 charges under other provincial acts, relating to off-highway vehicles, and there were nine charges related to the Gaming and Liquor Act, like minors possessing alcohol, people possessing open alcohol, and others being drunk in public, he said.

Three charges were laid related to controlled drugs and substances, and he noted that he didn't recall any drunk driving charges being laid.

“People were pretty good, and then I believe there were some other incidents like assaults, but they weren't related to the weekend's festivities,” he said.

“Just in general this weekend – I worked the whole weekend – people were pretty well behaved.”
