DIDSBURY -- The Didsbury Fire Department recently handed out awards to honour some of its top firefighters.

David Smith received the Greg Hnatiuk Firefighter of the Year award for "continuously demonstrating his ability to go beyond while showing exceptional leadership skills."

"He is a great mentor to our younger new probationary firefighters," said Deron Reimer, manager of protective services and acting fire chief.

Smith was also awarded a five-year service award.

Kianna Turner won the Rick Mousseau Memorial Rookie of the Year award for exceptional probationary firefighter. Turner also received her one-year service award. The rookie of the year award was named after the former fire chief and mayor.

"It was only fitting to name the award after Rick as he instilled these traits into his everyday life," said Reimer.

Also receiving awards were: Kyle Leeson, 10-year service; Patrick Milne, five-year service; Allyson Dunn, one-year service; and Brennan Tippe, one-year service.

"We are incredibly proud of our membership and the resiliency of the department through tough times this past year," said Reimer. "The department has been working diligently to rebuild processes and maintain/improve safety and training for all our members.

"I extend my sincere thanks to each member for demonstrating exceptional teamwork, dedication and determination to make the Didsbury Fire Department a positive and safe work environment."
