INNISFAIL -- When the Reform Party of Alberta was being created in 2016 by Randy Thorsteinson his daughter was eager to help gather signatures.

And now three years later, Lauren Thorsteinson, a 34-year-old dementia caregiver from Red Deer, has decided to run under the party banner in the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake riding.

"My biggest reason for running is personal responsibility. I don't imagine myself winning but I do know some people are scared of the NDP," she said when asked why she's running. "But my worry is that people are forgetting why the NDP won in the first place. I believe it was a PC (Progressive Conservative) loss, not an NDP win.

"I have an eight-year-old son and I want to look him in the eye and do everything I can to make sure he has a bright future," she added.

Lauren added that she has always embraced the party's platform, specifically its priorities on lower taxes, religious freedom and parental rights.

"I believe they are being slowly taken away," said Lauren of parental rights.

Lauren concedes she's running a limited campaign. She is putting up signage in both Innisfail and Sylvan Lake but is not planning on participating in any of the public forums.
