RED DEER COUNTY – Environment Canada issued a special weather advisory for Red Deer County and the urban centres near it Saturday warning that funnel clouds could develop.

The advisory is in effect for Red Deer County near Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

“Conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today,” the federal agency said in its 2:50 p.m. Aug. 17 alert update. “Funnel clouds may develop this afternoon.”

The federal agency added that these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

“This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado,” the advisory stated.
