The Mountain View Gazette received several awards in the 2018 Better Newspaper Competition (BNC) hosted by the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.
The Gazette took third in Best Overall Score in the largest circulation class of newspapers. Points were awarded for advertising content, advertising design, classified advertising, front page, editorial and opinion-editorial pages local features, community news, presentation, production quality, photography, and sports pages.
The Gazette also took a second for Best Front Page, and a third for Best Editorial Page.
“The Gazette stands out in the class for copious quantities of local content, from news stories to photos to photo pages to columns, clean design and production quality, compelling front page layout and solid advertising content,” judges said.
The Gazette also received a second place in the Best Feature Story by a Local Writer competition for the three-part article, “Local community-supported agriculture” written by Victoria Paterson.
“A multi-page, three-part, photo-rich feature spotlights community-centred agriculture at three locations in central Alberta,” judges said.
“Thoroughly readable, the stories show and tell how family enterprises contribute more than $1 billion to agricultural income – and lifestyle – in rural Alberta.”
In the 2018 Canada’s Energy Citizens photographic awards, photographer Noel West took a second place in the multi-photo category for “Water Valley rodeo features great competition," and third place for his feature photo “Spring Visitors.”
West's multi-photo entry and the feature photo entry both took first-place awards in the 2019 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards.
