Sundre area gravel, sand removal OK'd

Mountain View County’s municipal planning commission has approved a development permit for the removal of sand and gravel from a Sundre-area property in Division 6.

Mountain View County’s municipal planning commission has approved a development permit for the removal of sand and gravel from a Sundre-area property in Division 6.

The move came during the commission’s recent regularly scheduled meeting in council chambers.

The property involved is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Rge. Rd. 52 and Twp. Rd. 322, at SW 14-32-5-5.

The applicant is Wayne Keiver, who attended the commission meeting on July 5.

The application is to allow the removal of existing sand and gravel off the subject property, administration said in a briefing note to the commission.

“The applicant had previously provided access to the property for Alberta Transportation to mine aggregate products on the property. The agreement with Alberta Transportation has expired and the applicant was left with the remaining material which the applicant is requesting removal of within this development permit application.”

The applicant has no intention to further mine or disturb lands for the purpose of a gravel pit, members heard.

“Administration is working with the applicant to bring the property into compliance with the existing agricultural land use designation of the property that includes the removal of the existing aggregate and sand piles.

“Issuance of this development permit is for a time limited period to ensure compliance is completed in a timely manner. The intent of this development permit is to restore the property back to the agricultural use. The applicant has been cooperative with his compliance issues.”

The approval comes with a number of conditions:

  • The development permit is issued for the removal of the existing gravel pile only and no additional uses including aggregate related uses/operations have been granted with issuance of this permit.
  • In the case that there are more than five truckloads leaving the site in one day, the applicant and/or operator is responsible to ensure a haul route agreement with the county is obtained.
  • The applicant and/or landowner shall be responsible to contact Alberta Environment and Parks to reclaim the existing mined area on the subject property.
