Hall grant OK'd

The provincial government has approved a $160,000 grant for the Cremona fire hall upgrade project.

The provincial government has approved a $160,000 grant for the Cremona fire hall upgrade project.

In a letter to Mountain View County and the Village of Cremona, Minister of Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee announced the approval of the new grant effective immediately.

“The government of Alberta encourages strong working relationships between communities and regional approaches to municipal service delivery and supports regional and capacity building priorities through the Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) program,” said Larivee.

The village and the county made the joint grant application in January.

Reeve Bruce Beattie called the grant good news.

“It gives us a very good opportunity to do some retrofitting at the firehall in Cremona, and will result in a facility that will serve that community for another 20 years without having to go to the expense of a new fire hall,” said Beattie.

“I think it is a great decision and it's great to have that contribution coming from the provincial government to allow us to do those renovations.”

The upgrade project will include work on the hall to accommodate two new trucks currently being built for the department and one existing truck that is too big to fit into the existing hall.

The Cremona and District Fire Department serves not only the Village of Cremona but also Water Valley and surrounding areas.

Minister Larivee also announced the approval of a $200,000 grant for the Intermunicipal Collaboration component of the internmunicipal cooperation project, which involves the county and all the towns and villages in the county.
