RED DEER COUNTY – An Alberta emergency alert issued Thursday night warning of hazardous road conditions northeast, south and southeast of Edmonton including Red Deer County was cancelled Friday morning.

“Severe weather has improved and dangerous highway conditions are subsiding,” the province’s 6:02 a.m. update cancelling the alert said.

An emergency alert was issued at 8:52 p.m. Jan. 16 as severe winter weather conditions for areas northeast and south of Edmonton were impacting travel.

“Heavy snow and strong winds are causing dangerous driving conditions with zero visibility,” the alert said noting the more than 80 communities covered under the emergency alert.

Red Deer County was on the southern-most boundary of the alert.

The alert was updated at 11:11 p.m. to include areas southeast of Edmonton.

At 8:10 p.m. Thursday, Alberta 511 advised that Leduc RCMP issued a tow ban for the area due to tow trucks retrieving vehicles from the ditch.

RCMP advised at 6:42 a.m. Friday that the tow ban was lifted.

A wind warning for Red Deer County was also lifted Friday morning.
