DIDSBURY - Essentials for our Community, a local charity that helps those in need, is starting up a community soup kitchen.
Konnection Kitchen will start on Oct. 3 at the Didsbury Train Station from 6 to 7 p.m. and continue every Thursday.
Sheree Andrews said it's a free meal and a great way to interact with other community members.
"It's an opportunity for people to socialize and build relationships in the community," said Andrews. "It's aimed at individuals in our community who might be isolated and having a hard time finding a place to belong."
The event is open to Carstairs and Didsbury and area residents, she said.
"Where do you go except a bar to meet people if you don't go to church?" she said. "Where do you go to belong somewhere? It's for people who need community. It's not as much about economic level as it is about needing to connect in the community. A place to find friends and to belong."
Working at the Konnection Kitchen will be local volunteers as well as program recipients.
"We have volunteers from the community working at it," she said. "As well, our clients who use our program need to have volunteer hours to receive grocery cards that we give it. So a lot of our clients will be volunteering at the event as well."
Providing the food for the event will be local businesses AG Foods and Able Meats.
"Without them we wouldn't be able to do it," she said.
