DIDSBURY - A local team has qualified for the Alberta 55 plus Provincial Games after capturing the zone 2 championships on April 22 in Springbank.

The team is skipped by Dave Neustaeter and includes Nettie Neustaeter as lead, Verna Broad as second and Don MacMillan as third.

Zone 2 covers a large area from the Saskatchewan border to the B.C. border east to west, and from Olds to just south of High River from north to south.

In the team's first game, they beat the host team from Springbank 8-4. In the semifinal they beat Airdrie 11-1. The final was an exciting close 5-4 win over Cochrane.

"It came down to the last rock," said Nettie Neustaeter. "We were sitting one. We needed two to win, one to tie. We were pretty close. Unfortunately, the other team didn't put up a good guard and we were able to do a nice take out and won the game."

The win means that the Neustaeter rink will be representing zone 2 at the 55 plus provincial games in High Prairie on Sept. 14-16.

Nettie said they have been involved with the Alberta 55 plus games since 2011.

"We've played bocce, table shuffleboard," she said. "Now we've gotten involved with the floor curling in Didsbury and are really having a lot of fun with it."

Nettie said they're going to take some time off before getting some practice in before the games.
