DIDSBURY – During a special council meeting held on Nov. 28, council nominated Coun. Joyce McCoy as its representative on the library expansion committee.

Council also agreed to amend the committee's terms of reference to allow for alternates to be appointed for the Town of Didsbury, Mountain View County and Didsbury Municipal Library. Coun. Gail Nowland was appointed the alternate for Didsbury council.

McCoy told the Gazette she is excited to be on the expansion committee for the library.

“I'm really passionate about the library,” said McCoy. “I'm a heavy user of the library. I think it'll work out well for the town and the library.”

She feels that having the library expanding into the town office space once the town moves to its new location will be great for Didsbury.

“I think it's an essential service especially in these economic times,” she said. “People that can't afford Internet are going to the library and using it there to try and get a job, for example.”

McCoy said in addition to having books, the library offers plenty of other services for the community.

“I think (expanding) will allow them to offer more social programming, run better and larger programs,” she said. “They're so restricted in space right now they're limited in what they can offer. They're always having to move bookshelves around to make space for classes. This'll allow them to be the library they can be. The staff there is exceptional. We're really lucky here in Didsbury to have them.”

Council is expected to appoint the two members at large at the Dec. 13 meeting. No meeting date has yet been set for the expansion committee.
