Mountain View County council has passed motion approving 2017 Strings and Keys Funding Committee allocations.

The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

The committee provides money to music students.

The annual budgeted amount of the Strings and Keys Music Award is $3,000, council heard.

A total of nine applications were received in 2017. The committee approved funding in the amount of $4,700 based on the quality of applications received, and the considerable growth in the size of the fund since it was created in 2015.

"This reserve was set up to support individuals requiring financial assistance for the cost of musical education," administration said in a briefing note to council.

"Projects shall support music initiatives such private music lessons, instrument rental and/or maintenance, summer music programs, post-secondary music education, and travel to auditions or competitions.

"The funding is directed to individuals who are resident or living with the geographical boundary of Mountain View County, up to and including the age of 25, dedicated to developing musical talent and improving musical skills."

Council passed a motion approving the 2017 allocations, and a second motion approving an additional contribution of $485 to the fund.
