Mountain View County has received a prestigious award for its budgeting procedures.
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has granted the municipality the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2012 budget, officials said Thursday.
Mountain View County CAO Tony Martens says the award is welcome recognition of staff effort.
“I'm glad we got it because it means we are meeting good, sound financial principles and policies,” said Martens.
Greg Wiens, director of corporate services, says the award is typically only given to larger municipalities, such as cities.
To win the award the county had to satisfy four specific guidelines: for effective budget presentation; how well the municipality budget serves as a policy document; as a financial plan and operations guide; and as a communication device.
The GFOA says the award “reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of government budgeting.
“Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example of other governments throughout North America.”
As part of the award, the county's corporate service department will receive a certificate of recognition for budget presentation.
