CARSTAIRS - The Carstairs Heritage Centre has a new curator. Meggi Mah came from Saskatchewan to take over as curator-manager on June 1.

She told the Gazette that so far she is enjoying the job and the community.

"I've been working in the museum field since 2015 when I finished my master's degree in museum studies," said Mah. "I went to graduate school at the University of Toronto."

Mah said she's always been interested in museums.

"I've always wanted to touch the objects," she said. "I've always been very interested in histories and storytelling, and working with objects in museums has always been a way to connect that to my own interest as well as to connect them to people."

Mah said she had heard a lot of great things about the Carstairs museum and was excited to apply.

"It's a really great institution and an excellent opportunity," she said. "I was really excited to have been offered a chance to work here."

The heritage centre has been without a curator for a number of months since Michael Doherty stepped away to take a job in Airdrie.

"I'm really looking forward to getting to know the community better," she said. "Getting to know what's important for them for their museum; getting a sense of what stories people want to hear; what I can do to work with them for this to become a community hub."

Mah said so far she has enjoyed her short time in the community and got to meet some great people.
"So far it's been very lovely," she said. "Everyone has been incredibly friendly and very welcoming. I had the opportunity to tour Mountain View County and check out various tourist destinations and check it out. It was amazing. There is so much packed into a small area. It's small and quiet, but very exciting."

Mah said she believes the museum is in a good place and heading in a great direction.

"However, I am looking forward to putting my own stamp on it and maybe bringing some new things to the Carstairs museum," she said.

Coming up at the museum on June 19 is the meet-and-greet reminisce with Mah and Callie Daniels.

The museum is also having some special events during Carstairs' Beef and Barley Days on July 20-22.

"On the Saturday the museum will be open," she said. "We'll have horse and wagon rides leaving from here in the afternoon. We'll also have games and be open to the public."
