Nixon wants to promote region

Serving the riding of Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre since being elected in 2015 has been a privilege, and the UCP incumbent candidate said he hopes for the opportunity to continue standing up for rural Albertans.

Jason Nixon, who calls Sundre home, hopes to continue to represent the riding’s constituents in Edmonton “and to keep fighting for our unique needs” by bringing to the table “a strong voice advocating for our concerns.”

Ultimately, his goal is to do what he can to try and make Alberta a better province for his children to leave behind a better future for them.

The biggest concerns he’s heard during his travels are “hands down” the economy and jobs, he said.

When asked how the UCP would, in a global economy that is not likely to see soaring oil prices return any time soon, help to diversify the provincial economy to become less dependent on a volatile boom and bust industry, he said, “the demand for crude will keep going up for decades.”

The problem Alberta faces, he claims, is “not being able to get it to market.”

While acknowledging the need to consider ways to diversify the economy to attract more manufacturing as well as other businesses, Nixon said the No. 1 issue is pipelines.

A major part of that also involves scrapping the carbon tax, he said, adding when asked about the federally mandated framework that would then be imposed, that the UCP “wouldn’t accept Ottawa forcing one down” and fight the Trudeau Liberals in court alongside other premiers opposed to the levy.

When asked his thoughts on major oil corporations’ support for the carbon tax that has generated revenue to invest in new technologies, he said, “I don't represent companies like Shell. I represent constituents, and Albertans are against it.”
