Otis the great horned owl, Medicine River Wildlife Centre mascot and spokesowl for wildlife preservation, is once again a published author.

Erin Young, Medicine River Wildlife Centre (MRWC) education coordinator and Otis have joined voices to tell another story inspired by Otis and the environment.

"This is the second book in a long-term series,î said Carol Kelly, MRWC spokesperson. "The first book told the story of Otis the great horned owl who was admitted to the hospital at Medicine River Wildlife Centre when he was only days old. He had been found alone in the middle of a field. His nest and parents could not be located. Upon arrival he was hypothermic, but recovered quickly.î

Since 2003, Otis has become the mascot for the MRWC and all wildlife.

Very popular with children, the centre has heard that children will not go to bed unless Otis's book is with them. Otis is very sociable, and Tangles in Trash arrived just before Christmas. Written by Erin Young and illustrated by Gabe Wong, Tangles was sponsored by Nova Chemicals and as a result, the full cover price of $15 goes to protecting the MRWC natural habitat.

Tangles in Trash, through the voice of Otis, tells the story of the hazards to wildlife from garbage in the wild. The 24-page story focuses on conservation efforts and injuries to animals that occur.

Books are available throughout Central Alberta booksellers, at Dentoons, or online at
