The RCMP has warned against travel between Edmonton and Calgary Tuesday night.
“Extreme” weather conditions including high winds and blowing snow causing white-out conditions led to the decision, according to a news release issued on the evening of Jan. 21.
“Due to deteriorating weather conditions tow operations will be on hold” between Edmonton and Blackfalds.
Environment Canada’s blowing snow advisory was updated at 8:51 p.m.
The federal agency's special weather advisory was issued for parts of Alberta including Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.
“Winds gusting up to 70 km/h are also causing drifting snow which is adding to poor driving conditions,” it reads. “Winds will gradually diminish overnight which will allow conditions to improve.
Between five and 10 centimetres of snow is possible under narrow bands of moderate snowfall that will persist across central Alberta through to Wednesday morning.
“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.”
