Pregnancy centre on the way

Mountain View County councillors have been updated on plans to open a satellite branch of the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre (CAPCC) in Olds.

Mountain View County councillors have been updated on plans to open a satellite branch of the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre (CAPCC) in Olds.

During the recent policies and priorities committee meeting, officials with the Red Deer-based CAPCC outlined plans and answered questions from councillors.

Services planned for the facility, located at 4911 ñ 51 Avenue, include pregnancy tests, information about pregnancy, abortion procedures and risks, parenting and adoption, a 24-hour helpline, referrals for medical care and community resources, and post-abortion support, spokesperson Anne Waddell told the committee.

All services are free and confidential, she said.

She said officials expect about 100 new clients at the Olds location in the next year.

Division 7 councillor Al Kemmere asked Waddell, "Can individuals come to you for some guidance prior to an abortion? Do you offer that kind of consultation?î

Waddell replied: "That is part of our services and our education where we sit down and present the options and we educate them on the options of parenting, of adoption, of abortions (where) we present them with the risks and the procedures so they are well informed when they make their decision. Regardless of what they choose to do, we provide our services.î

A grand opening of the facility is planned for March 1.
