The Chinook's Edge School Division trustees have approved a number of proposed projects under the division's 2014-2017 capital plan.

The capital plan is for projects the division would like to move forward with. However, the projects themselves, including funding, would need to be approved by the province before moving forward.

The Chinook's Edge proposed projects approved by trustees at the recent board meeting include:

ï New Sylvan Lake school ñ At a total cost of $11,635,029, the project would see the construction of a new 500 capacity K-8 school.

"Projected growth dictates requirement of new space. Chinook's Edge currently has two elementary schools (in Sylvan), which are nearing capacity. Sylvan Lake has continued to be one of the fastest growing Alberta communities,î administration said in a note to trustees.

ï Ecole John Wilson School modernization ñ At a total cost of $7,064,199, the project would be for the modernization of the 550 capacity school.

"The 1966 section (of the school) is in need of essential modernization to improve the school environment for students. Other elements of the project include right sizing the school and organizing the space more appropriately,î administration said.

ï Spruce View ñ At a total cost of $2,471,544, the project would be for the addition of a gymnasium to meet programming needs of a K-12 school. "Modernization of existing gymnasium to provide program space. School currently well utilized and is physically out of classroom space for its programs,î said administration.

ï Elnora School ñ At a total cost of $725,600, the project would be for the modernization of the school.

ï Olds Koinonia Christian School lease support ñ At a total cost of $277,808, the project is for lease support for the school, which has come under Chinook's Edge as an alternative program.

The capital plan also includes a request for a new school in Carstairs and an expansion of the Jessie Duncan School in Penhold. Neither of those project requests included a total project cost estimate.

The capital plan proposals will now be sent to Alberta Education for consideration. All school divisions in the province submit capital plans on a yearly basis.
