Red Deer County included in emergency alert for hazardous road conditions

Area highways and roads may be closed without notice, Jan. 16 Alberta alert cautions as severe winter conditions blow through Thursday night

RED DEER COUNTY - An Alberta emergency alert was issued for areas northeast and south of Edmonton including Red Deer County Thursday night due to hazardous road conditions.

The 8:52 p.m. alert advised travellers in the area to delay all non-essential travel until conditions improve and if on the roads to use extreme caution when travelling on impacted roads and highways.

Those who are stranded are advised to stay with their vehicle and wait for assistance. For emergency assistance dial 911.

“Severe winter weather conditions for areas northeast and south of Edmonton are impacting travel. Heavy snow and strong winds are causing dangerous driving conditions with zero visibility,” the Jan. 16 alert said. “Area highways and roads may be closed without notice.”

At 8:10 p.m. Alberta 511 advised that Leduc RCMP issued a tow ban for the area due to tow trucks retrieving vehicles from the ditch.
