Residents rank crime higher than ever

Crime in Red Deer County is a greater concern than ever, according to a county spokesman.

Coun. Richard Lorenz made that announcement during the annual general meeting of the Olds Rural Crime Watch Association March 23 at the Eagle Hill Community Centre.

Lorenz said in a Red Deer County residents' survey, crime was ranked by residents as the third greatest issue they face.

“This issue has never ranked that high before,” he said.

Red Deer County officials say the number 1 concern was road conditions; number 2 was taxes.

In light of the concern over crime in the county, Lorenz had some advice.

“Although I am not an expert on crime, I think we all know that prevention goes a long way to help to reduce crime, especially in the rural areas,” he said.

He said proactive measures to reduce crime include making sure you know your neighbours, locking your doors and ensuring your property is well-lit.

“I myself live on a ranch, and I can tell you that paying attention to who's in your area will help you and your neighbours,” Lorenz said.

“I'm glad there are still people willing to get together and find solutions for persistent issues around crime. Working with RCMP makes us all safer.”
