The 12th annual Rural Alberta Ride for Dad in support of prostate cancer research was a hit with riders and supporters alike.

“The dollars raised per rider was good again this year,” said ride president Gil Enns. “We raised just over $10,000 on the ride that day (June 22). It was a good day and a good ride.”

In all, 47 rural riders took park this year, down from last year’s total of about 75. About 150 took part in the Calgary chapter’s ride.

The weather conditions – warm, dry and sunny throughout the 2019 ride day – were certainly welcome, he said.

“We had the gods smiling on us for a change,” he said. “I don’t know how we squeaked that out. You think about it, we had crappy weather on Friday, great weather on Saturday and crappy weather on Sunday.

As in past years, the riders made a large circuit around the district, ending up at Madden this year.

Money raised goes toward prostate cancer research, helping survivors and their families.

“We want to keep families together,” he said. “If we can save one life doing this it’s worth every penny. If we can get the word out for guys to go out and get tested and they have the disease and become survivors, we’ve kept one family together, so it’s worth it.”

There are plans to hold the ride again in 2020, he said.
