The first year of the two-year multi-million dollar Acme Road upgrade on Mountain View County's south boundary has gone very well to date, says MVC Division 1 councillor and deputy reeve Patricia McKean.

“I am very pleased with how it has gone,” said McKean. “Residents have been able to handle the detours all right. There were some concerns at the beginning with people travelling on the road, but those were addressed and it has been good since then.”

The two-year project covers an 11.2-kilometre stretch of roadway from Highway 22 to Spreters Hill, located between range roads 30 and 31, with construction including base work and chip seal.

Olds-based Richardson Brothers Ltd. is the main contractor on the job, with work this year including extensive roadway upgrades and preparations made for chip seal paving next spring.

Ryan Morrison, Mountain View County manager of infrastructure projects, said despite some very poor weather early on, things have moved along nicely.

“It's looking really good,” said Morrison. “They had some very inclement weather early on, losing the whole month of June. They are doing their best to get back on schedule. I'm fairly confident that they will get it done this year, as long as we don't get a very early winter.”

“Despite the weather they have been doing a really good job,” he added.

Morrison gave the MVC policies and priorities committee an update on the project at the Oct. 2 meeting.

MVC pooled provincial municipal sustainability initiative funds for the past several years to pay for the Acme Road project.

The project has involved some local traffic detours at the construction sites, detours that remain in place this week.
