DIDSBURY - For municipalities, one of the biggest if not the biggest expense is infrastructure. Residents drive over roads and streets daily and when those roads and streets have problems like cracks and potholes, residents take notice.

On June 25 six of the seven town councillors were given a tour of the roads and some of the public works facilities by Greg Skotheim, manager of public works and infrastructure for Didsbury. The purpose was to show council the areas in town that are on the long-term roads, streets and infrastructure capital plan, and explain why they are prioritized the way they are.

The tour came a day after council approved the tenders for both the 23rd Street infrastructure project and the butte pumphouse upgrade.

Mayor Rhonda Hunter said the tour was excellent and very informative.

"We were shown areas that are less expensive to fix as well as longer-term fixes, and other areas (the ditch across from Dick's Auto) that have been identified for improvement/repair, and we were told the approach to filling potholes and road cracks," said Hunter.

"We also got a tour of our current water distribution system at the butte, and the site of and plans for the soon to be constructed Rosebud Lift Station in Valarosa," she added.

Hunter said there were no major surprises on the tour but it was very beneficial.

"It was a lot of great information that I can say was certainly very beneficial to me and enlightened me to the extensive level of knowledge and planning that Greg Skotheim, public works manager, has and puts into budgeting for all of these improvements," she said. "I was very impressed with the tour, which will assist me in future budget deliberations and decisions about our road and infrastructure improvements."
