SUNDRE -- Dave Rogers, who lives in the Rocky Mountain House area, is running for the Alberta Independence Party in the riding of Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre.

Rogers is a former oilfield worker. As a young man he worked for Coles Auction Mart after moving to Rocky Mountain House at 18.

"We're a grassroots party," said Rogers. "We're just people sick of the crap. (Party leader) Dave Bjorkman found a way how we can leave federation and do better on our own. It's just common sense and he's made it policy."

Rogers said it's about giving the power back to the people and building for the future.

"Alberta has all the resources and we've been sending it back east for what, 70 years?" he said. "We needed help in the last four years and all we got was a kick in the butt."

Rogers said there is no reason for Alberta to struggle when the province is sending almost $40 billion to the federal government and getting maybe $10 billion back.

"It's crazy," he said. "Our province should be doing well. What Dave (Bjorkman) proposes is we leave now. It's a common sense way to go. They've disrespected us long enough. They've used us as a cash cow long enough. It's time to leave and make our own way. We'll do way better."

Another of the Alberta Independence Party's policies is having no one pay taxes until they make $45,000 per year.

"If you want to see change vote for us," he said. "We'll do what the people want."
