Wednesday night’s thunderstorm is believed to have been a contributing factor in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 2A between Olds and Didsbury.

On Sept. 18 at 8:45 p.m., Olds RCMP, the fire department and emergency services were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision on the secondary highway south of Olds at Twp. Rd. 320.

Police say they found a single sport utility vehicle (SUV) that had rolled into the ditch after it exited Highway 2A during a severe thunderstorm.

“The SUV sheared off a power pole as a result of the collision. A female driver was found to be unconscious and trapped in the vehicle,” police said in a press release issued today.

She was transported to the hospital in Didsbury upon extrication where she was further airlifted by STARS air ambulance with serious injuries, police said.

Emergency services transported two other passengers with non-life-threatening injuries to the hospital in Didsbury as well.

The collision had resulted in a temporary closure of Highway 2A at the Olds-Didsbury Airport and traffic was rerouted for a period of about three hours.

“The cause of the collision remains under investigation but RCMP believe severe weather to be a contributing factor,” said police.
