Alberta Transportation will look at the possibility of constructing a traffic roundabout at the intersection of Highway 27 and Highway 22 on the western boundary of the Town of Sundre with Mountain View County.
In a letter received for information by MVC council on Feb. 28, Alberta Transportation infrastructure engineer Kirk Kwan said a review is now underway.
"I am pleased to advise you that Alberta Transportation has retained CIMA+ to complete a review of seven problematic intersections within Alberta Transportation's central region," said Kwan.
The review will include the intersection at Highway 27 and Highway 22, he said.
In the letter, Kwan said the assessment is scheduled to be completed by May 2019 and will include the following:
• Safety and operational assessment – general intersection analysis that will include review of operation, geometry and historical safety performance.
• Roundabout analysis – Design a roundabout for each intersection that minimizes right-of-way impact. A life cycle cost comparison will be conducted to compare this roundabout layout to other potential intersection treatment options.
• Implementation plan – Use historical growth rates and trip generation estimates based on future land use or municipal development plans to determine the infrastructure needed and the trigger to stage the ultimate plan.
• Determine right-of-way requirements – Develop a recommended intersection treatment that minimizes the amount of right-of-way required and consult with affected landowners.
There will not be a public consultation component in the assessment, he said.
"Stakeholder consultation will be conducted at the administration level for each of the affected municipalities," he said.
