Mountain View County council has authorized administration to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Clearwater County regarding the Sasquatch and Partners program.

The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

The program is designed to promote responsible use of recreation areas in the West Country, including west of Sundre, Cremona and Water Valley.

Jeff Holmes, director of legislative services, told councillors, "The policies and priorities committee recommended that we enter into an MOU with Clearwater County to promote the Sasquatch program."

Under the program, signage promotes respectful camping, quadding and other outdoor activities in the area. The signage includes a depiction of a sasquatch, a mysterious ape-like creature.

Literature will also be distributed at information centres in the district.

The memorandum of understanding will facilitate cooperation between Clearwater County and MVC "for the protection and improvement of the environment as it relates to recreation in the West County. This MOU is a guideline and is not legally binding on either party."

As well as Clearwater County, the program also involves the government of Alberta, local oil and gas companies, utility companies and forestry companies.
