RED DEER COUNTY – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect Friday afternoon for Red Deer County and the urban centres near it.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said in its 3:19 p.m. Aug. 16 updated alert for the area.

The watch is in effect for Red Deer County near Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

A watch is enacted when conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with one or more of the following conditions:

• wind gusts of 90 kilometres an hour (km/h) or greater, which could cause structural wind damage;

• hail of two centimetres (cm) or larger in diameter; or

• heavy rainfall.

Thunderstorms will continue to develop this evening, says the federal agency.

“Some of these thunderstorms may become severe,” the alert continued, adding the threat of severe thunderstorms will end later this evening.

No watch was issued at the time of the update for Mountain View County or the urban centres near it.
