Severe thunderstorm watch issued Monday evening for Red Deer County

Risk of severe thunderstorms will continue into the night of Aug. 19 for central and eastern regions of Alberta

RED DEER COUNTY – Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Red Deer County and the urban centres near it Monday evening.

The watch was issued for Red Deer County near Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and damaging hail,” the federal agency said in it’s 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 alert update.

Some thunderstorms may become severe this evening, the alert for the area said.

“Thunderstorms will move toward the east and northeast, and the risk of severe thunderstorms will continue into the night for central and eastern regions,” the alert said.

A watch is issued when conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with one or more of the following conditions:

• wind gusts of 90 kilometres an hour or greater, which could cause structural wind damage;

• hail of two centimetres or larger in diameter; or

• heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, a heat warning is in place for Kneehill County and urban centres near it, including Torrington, Wimborne and Trochu.
